ADWAZ x SAK PASÉ Exhibition & Book Launch in NY! December 13 2016, 19 Comments
Created in conjunction with Bookdummypress' current exhibition, BOOKDUMMIES: Imaginary Studio, a Non-stop Process 1993-2015 by Victor Sira, we're pleased to announce ADWAZ, the latest installation by artist Jason Jaworski, comprised of work created over a ten-day period while teaching at-risk adolescent participants at the Lidè Foundation in different remote regions of Haiti, featuring a wall installation and table display consisting of over 100 combined photographs, prints, books, objects, tools and studio ephemera.
The title, ADWAZ, refers to a Haitian kreyòl term given for a slate or writing tablet. While teaching on location in Haiti, the artist noticed there were often times when the children had no desks and would instead pass around different “adwaz” to work on. In effect, each adwaz was itself a portable work studio, and this fact, combined with the artist's own migratory and nomadic nature seemed a perfect fit to describe the deeper meanings of the installation and the combined works as a whole wherein the artist continues his study and incorporation of both memory and longing.
Combined with the installation will be drawings created while at the Lidè program, a series of Polaroids from Haiti, as well as a book created by one of the classes led by artists Jason Jaworski and David Choe with numerous drawings contained therein by both artists.
In addition, the artist will also be exhibiting an in-progress book dummy for an upcoming publication that’s being made with the same body of work created in Haiti. Titled SAK PASÉ, the book is a celebration of the exuberance, warmth and bright color of culture the artist encountered while on location in Haiti. Created using the same materials the artist had on hand while teaching, the book is meant to provide a glimpse into the curriculum of each daily workshop, combining 4 different paper stocks, numerous collaged print cut-outs, hand painted text and artist embellishments in a variety of different mediums, along with a Polaroid print unique to each copy.
An extremely limited amount will be made for sale during the opening of the exhibition; those interested can inquire with the gallery directly: bdp@bookdummypress.com
All portions of the artist’s proceeds will be directly donated to support the Lidè Foundation in Haiti.
Opening Reception:
Saturday, December 17th from 2-6pm.
Address:
Bookdummypress
36 Cooper Sq. NY, NY 10003
(Use buzzer on left side of 34 Cooper Sq.)
The gallery is conveniently located in the East Village of Manhattan inside the historic Village Voice building and is accessible by most major subway lines.
Hope to see you there!

The Newsstand X MoMA New Photography 2015 November 03 2015, 4 Comments
So honored to have our photo-zine series 1000 MILES be part of the upcoming Ocean of Images: New Photography 2015 exhibit at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) as part of artist Lele Saveri's contribution of The Newsstand!
From MoMA:
New Photography, MoMA’s longstanding exhibition series of recent work in photography, returns this fall in an expanded, biannual format. On the occasion of its 30th anniversary, New Photography is expanding to 19 artists and artist collectives from 14 countries, and includes works made specifically for this exhibition.
Probing the effects of an image-based post-Internet reality, Ocean of Images examines various ways of experiencing the world: through images that are born digitally, made with scanners or lenses in the studio or the real world, presented as still or moving pictures, distributed as zines, morphed into three-dimensional objects, or remixed online. The exhibition’s title refers to the Internet as a vortex of images, a site of piracy, and a system of networks. Ocean of Images presents bodies of work that critically redefine photography as a field of experimentation and intellectual inquiry, where digital and analog, virtual and real dimensions cross over. These artists explore contemporary photo-based culture, specifically focusing on connectivity, the circulation of images, information networks, and communication models.
Coinciding with the opening of the exhibition, MoMA will also launch an online platform featuring selections from the archive of the New Photography series, including documents and images from the series' 30-year history.
The artists included are:
Ilit Azoulay (Israeli, b. 1972)
Zbyněk Baladrán (Czech, b. 1973)
Lucas Blalock (American, b. 1978)
Edson Chagas (Angolan, b. 1977)

David Hartt (Canadian, b. 1967)
Mishka Henner (Belgian, b. 1976)
David Horvitz (American, b. 1982)

Thinking Of You Artist Book Release & Signing! October 13 2015, 0 Comments
We're having a book release party and you're invited!!
Who:
Me & Hopefully You!
What:
Thinking Of You - Artist Book Release & Signing!
When:
October 18th, 1-6pm; Artist Talk @ 3pm
Where:
Bookdummypress Gallery in The Mana Contemporary Museum
888 Newark Avenue Jersey City, NJ 07306
(Complimentary shuttle from MILK studios in Chelsea available to and from the museum every 30min starting @ 12:30pm; also easily accessible from NY by taking any Manhattan PATH train to Journal Square Station)
I'm so excited for the upcoming release party and signing event for my newest artist book, Thinking Of You, an exhibition catalogue for my solo show of the same name, now on view at the Bookdummypress Gallery in The Mana Contemporary Museum.
I should be honest though, the book isn't really a book, but rather a card deck with an image on one side and a strip of text on the other. Designed to evoke the feeling of shuffling through old memories, it's devoted as much to play as it is to my person, with each bit of text being part of a personal memory, designed to be read in any order and still be understood, accompanied by over fifty images that complement each line of text evenly. The best part being that there's no wrong way to go through it; a few friends came over and tested it out and came up with a bunch of rad ways to read it, either through a random shuffling, a carefully considered organization, or laying the cards out and matching them like that old children’s game memory!
In addition to all that fun stuff, I'm going to be creating a NEW limited zine that complements the Thinking Of You artist book! Available only at the Bookdummypress Gallery as an exclusive for visitors to my show, the last time I made a limited gallery publication it ended up selling out within hours and was up on eBay selling for over $110! But don't worry, this zine won't be expensive- it'll be FREE!
Also, if you missed the chance to make it to the show's opening, I'll be there giving a guided artist tour of all the work @ 3pm :)
Basically: lots of fun & lots of hugs- hope to see you there!

Thinking Of You Exhibition Catalogue - Preorder October 09 2015, 0 Comments
I'm thrilled to announce the upcoming exhibition catalogue created for my most recent solo show Thinking Of You currently on view in the Bookdummypress Gallery at The Mana Contemporary Museum!
Due to the high probability of the book selling out we are accepting a limited number of preorders until October 17th - HERE.
While normal exhibition catalogues are nice and all, I didn't want to make a simple publication with images of everything in the show surrounded by a border of white space. Instead, I wanted the catalogue to evoke the feeling that people have told me they've had the most while viewing the show- that feeling of experiencing an old memory. Because of that, the concept of the book is simple but hopefully depthful: a deck of cards with each card having an image on one side and a line of text on the other where the viewer can shuffle the deck, getting a new textwork and order of imagery every time. The text itself is designed to where each line can be read and understood in any order, with the images complementing each line of text equally, allowing both chance and play to enter into each unique reading.
The best part is that there's no wrong way to read through it; I had a few friends test out the book dummy and noticed them using it a bunch of interesting ways- either through a random shuffling, a carefully considered organization, or laying the cards out and matching them like that old children’s game memory!
The book is being produced in a limited edition of 100, with each deck housed in its own box which I’ll number, handwrite the title, and emboss the SSK Press insignia on each copy :)
The publication will be released during a special signing event at the Bookdummypress Gallery on October 18th inside The Mana Contemporary Museum from 1-6pm.
For those wishing to preorder the book who will be attending the signing event on Oct. 18th, your shipping will be refunded to you in full upon pickup of the item at the gallery :)
Here's more specifics on the book:
- 2.25" X 3.5"
- 54 LOOSELEAF PRINTED CARDS IN HIGH QUALITY COLOR / BLACK & WHITE
- PRINTED ON 330GSM GERMAN SUPERIOR SMOOTH CARD STOCK PAPER WITH A CUSTOM BLACK CORE
- ROUNDED, DIE-CUT EDGES
- HAND-NUMBERED AND EMBOSSED BY THE ARTIST
- EACH ARTIST DECK IS HOUSED IN AN AQUEOUS ULTRA-VIOLET COATED CARDBOARD TUCK BOX WHICH COMES WITH THE TITLE HANDWRITTEN IN INK BY THE ARTIST ON THE OUTER LAYER
- ALL PREORDER COPIES ARE SIGNED BY THE ARTIST
- PRINTED IN A STRICTLY LIMITED EDITION RUN OF ONLY 100 COPIES

Jason Jaworski X Saelee Oh Art & Bookmaking Workshop! October 03 2015, 0 Comments
So grateful and inspired to have helped out teaching and leading an art & bookmaking workshop with Saelee Oh to all these wonderful people in recovery of mental illness. Maybe it's a bit cheesy to admit, but I always thought of art as something that makes you feel less alone, something that helps and heals your soul, and after teaching this workshop I feel that more and more.
Thank you to all the people at the health facility in San Luis Obispo for inspiring me to tears and thank you to everyone everywhere making art inspiring smiles everywhere!
Here are some sample spreads from the book we created:

Jason Jaworski X Juxtapoz X Thinking Of You October 03 2015, 4 Comments
AMAZING coverage of my solo show Thinking Of You on Juxtapoz!
From their online feature:
Featuring over 100 prints and numerous sculptural works, Thinking Of You is one of the largest and most intricate exhibitions the artist Jason Jaworski has created. Spreading the work out across two large scale installations and a video piece projected onto glass, the selection emphasizes the layers of meaning in the artist’s work, specifically his career-long mediation and incorporation of time, memory, chance and distance. Moving beyond the pages of the artist books for which he is renowned, Jaworski incorporates seemingly disparate bodies of work into two powerful, deeply connected installations, evoking the lush and the barren while simultaneously exploring and threading themes into a multitude of provocative questions related to a deeply entrenched longing which is common throughout all his work.
Jaworski’s photographic images within the first installation, Some Things I Left Behind, intertwine a complex range of projects and sources, including the performance based photography of his 1000 MILES project created in collaboration with MOCA, the process based images from his project SEA which had him developing his negatives with ash from a bomb site in Mexico City, the site-specific wandering from ROME ALONE where he followed employees of several bootleg factories in Taiwan and had his work printed at them, to the recent documentary theater of LABYRINTH where the artist followed a gang of little people through different slums in the Philippines where they created set pieces and scenes to act out for the camera. Threaded through the installation are a sprawling textwork and numerous artifacts from the artist’s archive that ties each image together through broad strokes of both textual and physical memory.
With the second more sculptural installation, Things I Found Along The Way, the artist includes an evocative mix of materials, such as various forms of found imagery, paint, chalk, dehydrated fern and bonsai leaves, ash, clay, earth, terra cotta, grated rubber, chia seeds, and a specially formulated compound of concrete the artist created himself. Incorporating each element as a sedimentary layer, the artist baked the materials onto canvas, afterward sanding them down and carving out different blocks, whilst shaking the canvas vigorously to allow different elements to fall on their own in an abstraction of subtraction. In addition to the two installations, the artist is exhibiting a video work comprised of shot and found footage set to a sound piece created by combining ambient music with manipulated field recordings the artist created while on location at Fukushima, Japan in March of 2011. Combined together, the two installations, the video work and the exhibited artist books culminate into a deft new vision and voice in contemporary art and photography.
The exhibition is on view until November 24th at The Mana Contemporary Museum in the Bookdummypress Gallery, check it out while it's still there!

Leaves of Clay Sculpture Series @ The Farmstand - Bolinas, CA July 22 2015, 0 Comments
So happy to announce my new sculpture series Leaves of Clay now on view at the Bibliagora exhibition at The Farmstand in Bolinas, CA.
Leaves of Clay is a new body of work comprised of four separate diptychs of concrete sculptures and their accompanying collaged prints. The title of the work invokes the beginnings of the book medium before the magic of the printing press, when a simple page of text would be an elaborate clay construction. Similar to those ancient books, each “leaf” of this series is unique in and of itself, with the foundation of each sculpture being a vintage cardboard box of negative sheet film. The imagery of each sculpture is comprised of collaged velox, gravure and albumen prints that are delicately placed onto a wet skim coat of concrete the artist created by literally mixing his own blood, sweat and tears into. A unique compound, the iron from the blood, combined with the salt from the latter two liquids, bonds with the concrete mixture to create a heightened surface fragility. Incorporating natural objects found outside the artist’s studio along with flecks of house paint, crayon, chalk, charcoal and oil pastel, each intricate layer of the work comprises a crude complexity which, when combined together, allow the work to reveal its undulations into an elevated elegance all its own.
Produced in a unique edition, each sculpture is signed in ink on verso - Please contact info@sskpress.com for further inquiry
Printed Matter's LA ART BOOK FAIR 2015 February 03 2015, 0 Comments
What an amazing journey this year has already been. From wandering through different dimensions of snow in Sedona earlier this month on psychedelics, to scouring slums in the Philippines to create images with strangers who are now friends in the middle of the month, to exhibiting at the 2015 LA ART BOOK FAIR at MOCA- it's been a dream.
Finally have a bit of breathing room to collect a few thoughts and whittle them down into sentences here and all I can think of are thank you's- thank you to you and everyone reading for the greatly cherished support and interest in my work. Every day is such a blessing to be able to push forward and continue creating new works, and while it's impossible to create something without some silver sliver of ego, I'm blessed to know that every part of myself that I put into my work is being taken as the wind picks up stray strands of leaf- tossing them in a trajectory unknown and unseen but always right and where they should be.
Exhibiting at the LA ART BOOK FAIR was an honor, especially to be surrounded by such great work from my peers in the Focus:Photography section curated by Shannon Michael Cane and Jordan Nassar with MACK Books, trolley books, Archive of Modern Conflict, Self Publish Be Happy, Little Big Man, Art Paper Editions, Mörel Books, Super Labo, J&L Books, Aperture, Dashwood Books, TBW Books, The Ice Plant, Capricious and many more- it was amazing. The fair couldn't have been better, with all the artist proofs of SEA and ROME ALONE having sold out, along with the special edition 1000 MILES book and personalized SSK PRESS found photo albums selling out as well. In addition to that, all the copies made available of my new book LABYRINTH sold out too. Only a few left from the edition, the copies we saved will be made available online to international and domestic customers in the coming days on SSK PRESS with the remainder being sent to our stockists around the world.
Thank you so much for providing the road to this amazing journey and may each creation serve as a candle to light the way to the next.

LABYRINTH - Teaser February 03 2015, 1 Comment
I was wandering through freshly fallen snow in Sedona as he told me what was going to happen.
Days later and I’m on a plane headed over 7,000 miles to my left if I were staring up the coast of California.
Now, a plane ride back to some city I live in but can’t yet call my home and all I can think of are all those lights burning bright like the fall flames from a fire lit long ago-
And all those memories in the Mojave moving much like those from yesterday when Manila was my morning and all the songs were sung even though my voice was still out of tune
And all those shards from that Sedona snow dwindling down like different zirconia glinting in the mist of moonlight with mountains like mounds of paper pushed together with tall tufts of cloud moving through a setting sun
A small screen in front of me flickers the direction and distance of Mecca: 13311km
The ocean is colorless from up here, the sky cloudless.
I close my eyes for a moment to let a random memory from Makati flash in front of me: the streets after the rain, with sunset fingers glowing of amber embers and droplets dotted along the surfaces of glass from each and every window when connected together forming an unseen face I’m still chasing
And going-

You can read all about the making of sea, the process behind other SSK Press books, as well as my encounters with explosions and underground witchcraft markets in Mexico, what it's like hitchhiking and running through radiation fields in Japan, how living in a German airport prepared me for taking a 400 mile walk to Paris and a bunch of other fun goodies in their interview feature here :
A Zine Master's Travels, From Witchcraft Markets to Post-Fukushima Japan.
Thanks so much to Alice, Josh, Noah, Stryder and everyone at Opening Ceremony :)

Hi all!
Over the past week our most recent photobook sea SOLD OUT in our shop online. Produced in an artist made limited edition of only 50 copies, we've been getting a lot of emails about where to find the book in stores, so we thought it would be fun to highlight some of our favorite vendors that also just happen to have a limited amount of copies left of sea!
First up - The International Center of Photography (ICP) in New York!
Coinciding with the museum's latest exhibition Urbes Mutantes: Latin American Photography 1944-2013, we are honored to have our Mexico City photobook placed on the shelves alongside the work of some of our favorite photographers!
You can find the book in their Midtown Manhattan store or online here.
